Senior School Academics

The York School offers an education marked by individual attention, small class sizes and a climate of collaboration and excellence. At the Senior School, our teachers encourage students to ask questions and to act within their community, promoting greater self-discovery along with an awareness of the world around them.

We are proud to be the first school in Canada to be accredited to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) program from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12. With more than 50 years of experience, we have developed an innovative teaching culture that prepares our students to succeed at university and beyond.

As an IB World School, we cultivate skills which we believe are the cornerstones of academic excellence, such as creative thinking, research and time management. Our future-ready approach to technology includes laptops for all students, SmartBoards, online collaboration tools, the latest learning software and technologically integrated classrooms.

The result? Our students excel and become active, compassionate and lifelong learners.

The IB Diploma Program
The York School offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program as the final two years of Senior School study. The IB Diploma provides an internationally recognized, highly prestigious and well-balanced education for our students.

Recognized globally as the gold standard in education, the Diploma prepares our students for the intellectual rigour of university study by teaching them the oral, writing, research and analytical skills necessary for success.

Of course, world-class education is about more than just academics. A core requirement of the Diploma is the CAS program (Creativity, Action, Service), which encourages students to be involved in artistic and athletic pursuits, as well as community service work. Our students participate enthusiastically while developing an awareness and appreciation of life outside the academic arena.

The IB Diploma is the ultimate passport. It prepares our students for the best post-secondary institutions in the world while giving them the confidence that they have what it takes to achieve success.

Personalized Pathway Program (Grade 11 and 12)
The Personalized Pathway Program offers students a more flexible approach in their final two years. Students in this pathway graduate with their IB course transcript and Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), completing the same courses as their peers. Students in this pathway benefit from a globally recognized IB education, including the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, but are provided with greater flexibility in choosing a composite of courses that better meets their needs. For example, this program may benefit a student who plans to major in Science in university and wants to take three senior Science courses, or a competitive athlete whose training or travel schedule requires greater flexibility.
