Student Life & Belonging

Learning extends beyond the classroom with our Student Life programming at The York School. We encourage students to take an active role in the life of the school and their local community. Through meaningful community service, we strive to develop an increased sense of social responsibility and a global view of society as they take action to make a difference in the lives of others. Our Leadership programming encourages students to be risk-takers, embrace their full leadership potential and thrive as their authentic selves.

Participation in our house system promotes school spirit, friendly competition and fosters a strong sense of belonging. Our assemblies and special events that honour holidays, celebrations and important days of significance continue to foster a safe supportive inclusive community where everyone feels valued and respected.

Co-curricular clubs and athletics provide students with the opportunity to explore new passions and interests, develop new skills and nurture new friendships. We live our school motto, “Experience Teaches” with overnight camp excursions and engaging field trips that enrich the curriculum and complement the Program of Inquiry.

Student Leadership
Our Grade 5 leadership program fosters agency and provides a rich opportunity for students to have voice, choice, and ownership over their own learning and be actively involved in their school community.

Our Grade 5 leaders co-construct assemblies, weekly radio news broadcasts, service campaigns, house challenges and community-building events that enhance the student experience and strengthen the school‘s climate and culture. Students learn to take risks, work creatively and collaboratively, and develop their listening and communication skills. Grade 5 leaders also learn to embrace their leadership potential as ambassadors and tour guides at admissions events and act as positive role models for younger students.

House System

Earth represents the strong foundation of our community. It keeps us grounded and encourages our growth.

Air is the connection between our physical and mental states. Air is what brings mindfulness and balance to our community.

Fire is the passion within our community and the spark of curiosity that inspires us to embrace new opportunities and challenge ourselves to take risks.

Water represents what connects all members of our community. Water is the undercurrent that binds us together and sustains our relationships.

Our new Spirit Houses will help us build even stronger relationships across the York community!
