Rainbow Railroad’s CEO speaks at York’s human rights assembly

Kimahli Powell, the CEO of the global non-profit Rainbow Railroad, was a special guest at a human rights assembly for our Middle and Senior Schools on December 6. Rainbow Railroad assists people around the world who are facing persecution because of their sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics.
During Mr. Powell’s interactive and informative presentation, we learned how Rainbow Railroad helps LGBTQI+ people find safety through emergency relocation, crisis response, cash assistance and other forms of support. Since the organization was founded in 2006, it has helped close to 10,000 individuals.

The York School is participating in Rainbow Railroad’s #60in60 fundraising campaign. The goal of the campaign is to raise funds in the last 60 days of 2023 to help at least 60 threatened LGBTQI+ people attain safety. Two students – siblings Grace and Christian P-H.– have been generating enthusiasm and donations for the campaign. To date, the York community has raised more than $16,000 through online donations, the sale of candygrams, a breakfast bake sale and a raffle for Leafs and Raptors tickets.

We’re grateful to Mr. Powell for telling us about the important work he is leading at Rainbow Railroad.
